Overview

Explore the striking beauty of the Yukon and Alaska on this self-drive adventure. Beginning in Whitehorse, you’ll journey through the mountainous scenery of this astonishing region, visiting the Denali National Park, Tok, Dawson City and Anchorage. You will visit Gold rush towns where fortunes were made and lost in the last 18th century and travel through spectacular glacial landscapes, just a few hundred kilometres below the Arctic Circle (JV).

Day 1

Whitehorse

Arrive at Whitehorse airport, pick up your hire car and then drive to your hotel. Whitehorse is a charming town, an important staging post during the Klondike Gold Rush and home to several important and interesting historical sites.

Day 2

Whitehorse - Haines Junction 95 miles

Head west through the small villages of the territory to Haine’s Junction located on the edge of the spectacular Kluane National Park. Overnight in Haines Junction, a truly wilderness town surrounded by rugged but beautiful landscape.

Day 3

Haines Junction

Today is at leisure to explore the village. We reccommend visiting the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations' Da Ku Cultural Centre to learn about this fascinating area and its inhabitants. Later perhaps drop by the St Elias Convention Centre to see the rotating cllection of art from local and recent artisits.

Day 4

Haines Junction - Tok 290 miles

A breathtaking journey through North America's stunning landscapes awaits! Travelling the Alaska Highway, you'll see rugged mountains, dense forests, and pristine lakes. Starting near the majestic St Elias Mountains and Kluane National Park in Haines Junction, the route ends in the vast open landscapes of interior Alaska near Tok. Along the way, you may spot wildlife like bears, moose, and eagles.

Day 5

Tok – Fairbanks 200 miles

Today, you will drive along the Alaska Highway, witnessing the landscape gradually shift from flat terrain and rolling hills with dense spruce and birch trees to mountain vistas and river crossings. As you near Fairbanks, Alaska's second-largest city, the scenery will change again, featuring larger settlements along the Tanana River.

Day 6

Fairbanks - Denali National Park 165 miles

Today your route will be along the George Parks Highway, across the Tanana River and onto the Denali National Park. You can choose to enjoy several outdoor activities in this pristine wilderness, such as hiking, canoeing and fishing. Continuing south you will spot North America’s tallest peak – Mount Denali at 6193 metres. You will have two nights in Denali National Park.

Day 7

Denali National Park

You have a full day to explore this stunning National Park, and you can choose to enjoy several outdoor activities in this pristine wilderness, such as hiking, canoeing and fishing. The protected parklands stretch out serenely beneath the shadows of the majestic Mount Denali, giving visitors the opportunity to see moose, caribou, grizzly bears and Dall sheep.

Day 8

Denali National Park – Anchorage 236 miles

Continue your adventure southbound, traversing vast woodlands or spruce, birch and aspen. You will experience the great geographical diversity of Alaska, as you drive from dense evergreen forests and windswept mountains into the lush Matanuska River Valley. This is the richest agricultural region in Alaska, where 20-hour summer days product giant vegetables. At the end of the day you will reach Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city located at the head of Cook Inlet. Two nights in Anchorage.

Day 9

Anchorage

Today experience the modern city of Anchorage and its surroundings, perhaps enjoying a stroll through the beautiful displays of the Anchorage Botanical Gardens featuring more than 1,100 species of hardy perennials and 150 native arctic plant species. Or you could explore Chugach National Forest, a wildlife photographers paradise, also popular with anglers and hikers.

Day 10

Anchorage – Nabesna 298 miles

An enchanting journey filled with natural beauty and variety awaits as you travel from Anchorage to Nabesna. This day trip reveals stunning views of the Chugach Mountains, the Matanuska River, scenic valleys, and the awe-inspiring Matanuska Glacier. The route follows the Wrangell-St Elias National Park, with its dense forests and towering peaks. As you take Nabesna Road to your destination, the landscape transforms into pristine wilderness, glacial rivers, and rustic homesteads.

Day 11

Nabesna - Dawson City 291 miles

For an authentic northern wilderness experience, today’s journey will awaken your adventurous spirit! As you head back towards Tok and make your way to the border, you'll traverse some of the most unspoiled wilderness in North America. You'll cross back into Canada at Little Gold Camp, the highest border crossing between the two nations. Continuing along the aptly named Top-of-the-World Highway, the road leads to the riverside town of Dawson City, a key hub of the 18th-century Gold Rush, where fortunes were won and lost. Day 12

Dawson City

Explore this historic city and relive the days of prospecting. You may choose to try your hand at panning for gold at an authentic working gold claim. Tour the historic landmarks of the city, where many of the original buildings had stood the test of time whilst others have been faithfully restored. Perhaps try your luck in the evening at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Hall.

Day 13

Dawson City – Whitehorse 332 miles

The Klondike Highway is your route back to the southern region of the Yukon. En route you will see glimpses of the mighty Stewart River before it joins with the Yukon River for its 3,500km journey up to Alaska’s Bering Sea. You could choose to pause at one of the fold rush staging posts and Bonanza Creek to see the origins of the Gold Rush. Arrive in Whitehorse for a two night stay

Day 14

Whitehorse

Today enjoy an included full-day scenic trip along the South Klondike Highway to Fraser in British Columbia. Upon arrival, board the world-famous narrow gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railway to travel through areas still echoing with the hardships and fortunes of the past, Glacier Gorge, Dead Horse Gulch and Bridal Veil Falls. The route travels over the White Pass Summit before ending in Skagway Alaska. Return by motorcoach to Whitehorse.

Day 15

Tour ends

Today your adventure comes to an end, as you check out and head to the airport for your flight home
