Alaska Useful Facts
Flights and Transfers
Flights to Alaska take around 14 hours – Anchorage International is the largest of the airports and the most common choice when visiting Alaska. From here, you can hire a car to get around or, if you’re visiting more distant destinations, you may wish to take a domestic flight to your next location – speak to one of our travel experts when booking.
Visa Requirements
You will require a passport which is valid for six months after your return, and you will also need a USA visa waiver form or ETSA. You can apply for this online up to 72 hours before travelling.
Language
English is the primary language spoken, although many other languages are spoken within the cities and communities as with other parts of America.
Transportation
By train: The Alaska Railroad runs through many of the main locations, and is famous for its summertime services. Smaller planes are used quite often, as many places aren’t accessible by train or car.
By car: Alaska isn’t a particularly well-connected state in terms of road transportation, with a small area covered in relation. Renting a car here is also more expensive than in other parts of the US, so it’s worth comparing prices beforehand to ensure you’re not paying more than you need to.
By plane: Small planes are a great way to get around, as they offer the fastest and most efficient mode of transport – particularly if you’re travelling long distances. In the larger cities, such as Anchorage, domestic flights are easy to access.
By boat: Cruise ships are actually a scenic and effective mode of transport in Alaska, due to the vast amount of glaciers and surrounding coasts. If you’re keen to explore the wildlife and natural side to Alaska, you may want to opt for a boat ride – depending on where you’re heading, it will either be a cruise ship or a smaller ship or yacht.
By bus: There are a few choices for buses and shuttle services in Alaska, connecting you to a range of destinations – you won’t find Greyhound or Megabus services here though, as you would elsewhere in the US. Bus companies change fairly frequently though, with others taking their place, so it’s well worth checking before you make travel plans to ensure you can embark on your route with ease.
