Boston's Useful Facts

Flights and transfers

BA flights to Boston from London take around 6 hours 45 minutes, and there is a great range of options for flights to Boston from UK whether you want to travel from a regional airport or would prefer to take an alternative airline. Call us up to speak to one of our friendly and helpful team who will be able to guide you through the different options available to you.

If you’ve booked a tour with us you’ll be met by a representative who will guide you to your transfer vehicle. Alternatively, you can use taxis or Boston’s comprehensive public transport system to transfer to your hotel.

Visa requirements

British and Irish passport holders can use the Visa Waiver programme which allows you access for 90 days and is limited to tourism and business purposes. Entering the US this way requires online application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) website which costs $14.

Language

English is the de facto official language and spoken as a first language by almost everyone.

Transportation

Drive: Boston’s layout is more similar to European cities than American cities as it does not contain a grid layout. This effectively makes it more challenging to navigate that most cities in the US – but this is one of many reasons why driving here can’t be especially recommended. Traffic is heavy all of the time and gridlocked during peak times, parking is expensive and often difficult to find, and local drivers are notoriously aggressive.

Subway: The subway system covers most of Boston and is a highly convenient way to get around. There are four colour-coded lines so it’s well worth buying a subway map and familiarising yourself with where you can catch a train from.

Bus: Slower but cheaper than the subway, taking the bus can be a useful choice if you’re budget conscious.

Taxi: Probably the most expensive travel option but useful if you’re looking for an easy option it is definitely offered here.

Vaccination and health

No specific vaccinations are required for entry to the US or specifically Boston but check if you think there may be a cause for concern. Boston’s hospitals and medical facilities are excellent but health care in the US is more expensive that anywhere in the world, so remember to purchase health insurance before you travel.
