Music Cities of the South by Motorhome

9 nights from £1,839 per person Including Flights

Overview

A motorhome holiday gives you the flexibility to stay as long or as little as you like in each place. This is a suggested itinerary picking up and dropping off your motorhome in Atlanta, and taking a loop through the southern states of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee including vibrant music destinations and iconic Civil Rights cities. However you could alternatively begin and end your holiday in Nashville, perhaps focusing on the celebrated music cities such as New Orleans and Memphis and touring the Mississippi Delta – the birthplace of the Blues. (CA)

The itinerary below is for 9 nights, but you can extend and stay for more nights in the destinations where you’d like to spend more time.

Highlights

  • Visit the vibrant city of New Orleans, enjoying the great live music and sampling the wonderful cuisine with French and Creole influences
  • Enjoy great live music in venues and bars throughout Memphis and Nashville
  • Explore the Civil Rights Movement through the southern states

Day 1

Fly into Atlanta and check into a hotel near the airport for an overnight stay (it’s not possible to pick up a motorhome directly from an international flight).

Day 2

Atlanta – Montgomery (155 miles)

Travel independently to the RV depot to pick up your motorhome then get onto Highway 85 for a couple of hours drive to Montgomery – the State Capital of Alabama. Here you can visit the Jefferson Davis’ Confederate White House, Old Alabama Town and the Civil Rights Memorial Center.

Day 3

Montgomery – Mobile (185 miles)

You could drive directly to New Orleans which would take around 5 hours but you’re on holiday, so the recommended overnight stop is just south of Mobile on the Alabama coast. As well as the beautiful coastline, there are also attractions in the port city of Mobile such as the battleship USS Alabama and various museums housed in historic mansions.

Day 4

Mobile – New Orleans (160 miles)

This morning drive to the eclectic city of New Orleans, filled with live music venues, superb restaurants, fascinating museums and fun bars – it’s one of our favourite places as there really is something for everyone here. You can overnight in the French Quarter RV Park in New Orleans which might be lacking in looks but more than makes up for in its location within walking distance of the heart of New Orleans. Whilst you’re here you could take a cruise on a Mississippi paddle steamer, take a swamp tour or visit the beautiful plantation houses in the area.

Day 5

New Orleans - Jackson (180 miles)

You’ll now be heading towards Elvis country, and you can drive directly to his birthplace in Tupelo. However we suggest you break your journey with a stopover in Jackson – the capital of Mississippi. On the outskirts of the city is the lovely LeFleurs Bluff State Park where you’ll find a lake, golf course and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. In the city you can visit the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, the Old Capitol or the Mississippi Childrens Museum.

Day 6

Jackson - Tupelo (160 miles)

Drive the scenic route the Natchez Trace on the way to Tupelo. Here you can visit the preserved childhood home of Elvis Presley and the Elvis Presley Museum revealing his early life and music. Here you will also find a site of a historic Civil War battle plus a Buffalo Park!

Day 7

Tupelo – Memphis (110 miles)

Drive through the Holly Springs National Forest to Memphis – the birthplace of rock n roll and home to a fantastic array of music venues and museums, plus the highly recommended Civil Rights Museum built around the Lorraine Motel – scene of the assignation of Dr Martin Luther King. The Memphis-Graceland RV Park & Campground is located just off Elvis Presley Boulevard close to Graceland.

Day 8

Memphis - Nashville (230 miles)

It’s now onto the world famous music city of Nashville, where you can enjoy the live music bars, visit the Grand Ole Opry and enjoy a tasting at the Jack Daniels Distillery

Day 9

Nashville – Chattanooga (140 miles)

Journey to the final stop of your southern circuit – Chattanooga. Take the Incline Railway up Lookout Mountain and stroll the charming downtown area.

Day 10

Chattanooga - Atlanta (130 miles)

It’s time to drive back to Atlanta to drop off your motorhome and take the flight home.
